If you ever plan to kidnap a COBOL developer, make sure to offer their employer a “double-rate same day delivery option” in the ransom.

It’s a good holiday because it has the responsibility to not have a facade. What even is Christmas? A solstace celebration? A celebration of the natural forest? The birthday of someone who was probably born early fall? An excuse to give children gifts? Idk anymore man.

Linux@programming.dev•Is it worth upgrading from 24.04 to 25.10?
4·6 days agoFedora, which has similar update frequency options, but no snaps. Almost all distros push major changes right after their big release so they have as much time to test it among their enthusiast user-base before it hits everyone. Ubuntu probably has a major redesign staged for the 26.10 release too, and LTS users won’t see it until 28.04.

Linux@programming.dev•Is it worth upgrading from 24.04 to 25.10?
4·6 days agoIf you want stable and hassle-free, that necessarily means you should stop keeping up with the minor version release notes. It’s just healthier to get an update every two years with lots of features.
It’s the same desire for hassle-free that drove me away from Ubuntu. There just wasn’t (and probably still isn’t) a hassle-fee way of avoiding snaps.

Linux@programming.dev•Is it worth upgrading from 24.04 to 25.10?
3·6 days agoWhat update frequency you want has nothing to do with the distro itself and everything to do with who you are as a person. I stuck to LTS when I was on Ubuntu because I don’t want to spend my life managing and studying my operating system on one of my several computers and OSs I use. A lot of people on Lemmy use things that require a lot of maintenance because maintaining the OS is the real hobby. If you’re gonna keep up with all the changes in 25.10, sounds like you’re the kind of person who should just go for it.

This is why you ask Claude to write in Ruby on Rails. Modern problems require modern solutions.
It can also happen in Python if you edit the file after runtime. It parses the code on import, but re-reads the file as text during the error message, so if you added or deleted lines, the error report can report a dubious line.
Just be mad at systemd the same way everyone else is; invent your own reality and throw a fit about that instead!
C doesn’t stop users from shooting themselves in the foot. C++ has new footguns added to the standard for you each version!
Lots of pro-Ubuntu propaganda in those flow charts. At this point, Ubuntu of any flavor shouldn’t be recommended to anyone. There are always better alternatives.
Pacman will start the fight as soon as all packages are up to date, assuming no packages push updates in the time it takes to update (unlikely).
My code is self-documenting because I write docstrings for all my code. Simple as.

If I had a complaint about VLC, it would be that it needs MORE settings. If a video is picking the wrong default language, there’s no way to set a new default, you’re just SOL and have to swap it every time. It’s amazing that people looked at VLC and said “You know what this needs, less features”, and then you spend forever looking up keyboard shortcuts you’ll never remember.
