  • I am not saying this as a moderator: you’re person of obnoxious answers. Probably far too intelligent to even consider that you’re actually interacting with other human beings that may not want to engage or sacrifice their time with your rants. But I don’t ban based on personality.

Anyway, I don’t have to answer any of your questions. Typing comes too fast on your keyboard. Try stepping away, read, click the links (like redishiel CVE), take a deep breath, live more calmly.

I will post a reply to you reply on Redishell. So that you can check again what happened there. You went too fast and hit your own wall.

  • the only loss here is my time as a moderator :P

I am not banning anyone, you were quite civil in this “fight” 1

Do keep in mind that all this has a lot of “editor wars” vibes. But the conflict goes beyond Debian (e.g. including Rust in Linux kernel), and actual harmful discussions between Rust and C/C++ people is REAL, damaging our communities, and very much driven by generations/ network-effect. And this is just sad. It’s not a technical issue, and overcoming it seems nearly impossible at the moment.

1 I’d call it discussion, but it seems to me that ‘whoever loves Digit’ was ranting more on their own behalf… as per their own words:

Awareness should be raised for this stuff, because people are sadly not as concerned as they should be about the state of cybersecurity right now. It’s particularly an issue in Linux / FOSS circles where there seems to be more of a false sense of security these days.

I agree with these words, but not all you said (specifically, backdoors to me are a smaller concern in the software industry nowadays in comparison to the Redishell provided that you were unable to fully understand). Anyway, I don’t see reason to remove any of the most downvoted comments you have. But I will take the opportunity here to raise a warning to you. OR, let’s make it a personal advice: arguing on the internet is not worth the emotional toll. As with any advice, you can either take it or leave it. Good luck!

  • To each its own in accordance to their needs. Debian is great unless you want to add proprietary stuff like GPUs. That’s the whole reason so many distros (e.g. Ubuntu) raised to fame and gained popularity while being based on Debian… That, and the fact that until recently Debian installation guide was not updated and called to download an ISO to be burned in 1-2 CDs… that was so f*ing unclear. Of course you can use a pendrive, but if the guide talks about CDs… that’s just confusing to newbies. None pointed that out, but to me is like being even less friendly than Arch :P Just my opinion. That said, I have been using Debian based distros for most of my time, even today (desktop PC with MX ‘ahs’.)

  • You do you, of course. But, I think that combining the approach of immutable distros to either case would be a great way to add some security. Even if nothing is ever 100% safe, this would be very robust. Or, even without an immutable distro you can do Qubes or just any sandboxing (e.g. bubblewrap) to open documents and files.

In any case, being paranoid certainly is an elegant sport. Perhaps even more than golfing (:

  • Yeah, Ubuntu was great long ago. Nowadays its parent company is trying to push new standards (started with desktop environment, then with how to install apps) that are extremely shitty takes on open source solutions. They need to be more humble… Imho, Canonical is no better than Microsoft. It’s like they want to be in that position, next to the ‘great players’ and just try so hard. Knowing one’s place requires too much wisdom.

PS: I hoped all around Debian distros, my favorite is now MX Linux “ahs” version (:

Perhaps you’re new to this world, a troll, or just consumed too much disinformation. Some of your points have a certain nuisance, and are valid up to some degree. And, given that many people already answered politely… Instead of removing, I will lock this thread. Discussions are welcome, yet… there’s some tongue in cheek tone to this that I don’t quite like (And it was reported as coming from ill faith.)
