Gnome I customize once, take a day, have some fun, and I’m done. Kde I customize at least once everyday. and always want to change something because of how simple it is to move/add/change stuff. I end up spending more time customizing than using my pc. I’ll prob swap back to kde at some point, but gnome extensions just remind me of cydia and feel good to use. I like opinionated extensions that ppl have ppl have put thought and development time in to, like the extensions are usually intutive and have gone through a lot of testing to get to they layout that they have. They just work.
Im learning to make edm visuals on tiktok using primarily Blender. r.EndTimes on ig/rednote, etc.

I wont be able to buy one til next year, prices are up so much I done even want to, might as well save up more and wait til the steam vr headset drops, idk ive started reading more, everything seems expensive, pirating comics is free
I forgot I was using docked bazzite handheld as a pc for setup yesterday and started using it for my normal browsing. No differnce using zen there or on my pc, except the amount of tabs before I lag, way less resources but I didnt really experience issues (legion go s z2 go)
Isn’t it already in desktop mode? I swapped to linux and mostly use flatpaks on my main pc and havent looked back after a year.
Flathub by default, I just really dislike snaps lol. Ubuntu studios prob a good rec for ppl new to linux and wanting to see what good free creative software is available.
I really like the top bar, hot corner, workplace swapping on mouse scroll, control center, etc. Kde is a close second for me, and I may be swapping back soon just because I get bored using the same thing. Prob not if you can’t backup your layout, really like what my gnome desktop looks like and its functional/productive.
Tophat is great for quick resource monitoring. Ddterm for a dropdown terminal. Campeek to quickly check webcam. A timer for self timing some online work I do that is self reported. It’s just perfectly setup and not crowded at all while having so much. I do miss the pop out tab sticky notes on kde.
Gnome extensions can look pretty much exactly like kde or better depending on your taste, kde is easier to customize and more intuitive. I like that gnome is extension based with each extension being something you pick, many having their own customization and settings.
Some extensions I like: Arcmenu: start menu like windows, kde, etc. lots of layout options, replaces the hot corner big icon search menu thing
Dash to dock: use on handheld, perfect touchscreen menu customizable or (use one at a time) Dash to panel: use on desktop, even more customizable, basically gives you a panel since gnome by default has the hot corner android like app menu (which I also use mostly on the handheld, love the hot corner for moving stuff around)
Windows thumbnails (pip any window, monitor downloads or chats)
I use a lot more but forget the names, nothing really breaks if you toggle use incompatible addons or whatever it’s called. You can also edit the addon and change the version since that is what the devs do 90% of the time to update it.

Linux@programming.dev•Damaged Pocket Computer Becomes Portable Linux Machine
1·2 months agoI would love a modern device meant to just use the terminal, just an excuse to use all the fun terminal apps and ssh to all my devices for no reason
I tried hosting for myself and 6 months in it was hitting memory limits (prob because of friendica and sharkey on the same instance) Did not care enough about hosting my own content to deal with that.

4·4 months agoWhile gnomes simplicity looks better for newcomers, it’s actually worse, I hated it, tried kde, loved it, later tried gnome again and swapped to it, had more appeal once I already was using linux and used to it. It’s not immediately obvious what extensions to use and where to get them or that they even are a thing you can do. You goto settings and get turned off by the lack of customizability you’ve been hearing about.
Also this is about cloud services lol, if you want like a drive on your phone, the app is the files app or sftp to your pc no selfhosting required lol
Most of the popular ones have apps you can download seperately and the server just works to connect devices and allow you to use a web interface if necessary, like if you want a pc app it already works like a pc app, its just accessed through your webbrowser?
These do tend to be open source so they aren’t also going to make free apps in different codebases and pay developer fees, not realistic, what is realistic is web apps that ppl can easily copy and host themselves. They aren’t android/ios developers.
No sane person suggests you self host mail or make a phone (no one using linux phone suggests it) What vpn would you self host?? How would that even work lol, you mean tailscale? That lets you connect to your own pc from anywhere, not exactly how the vpns you typically use work. Same with storage, ppl reccomend backups on the cloud and selfhosted. If you value your data might as well make sure you never lose it in case something goes wrong.
You dont have to open them up to the internet, I use tailscale, host on my own pc, runtipi makes most apps easy to setup and update, one click (plus filling out any specific info like username/password unless you create the account when you open the app for the first time)
Nah its way worse when all of your ideas are wrong and in the complete opposite direction, better to think in the right direction and get confirmation that you are thinking correctly as you go
Themeing icons and other stuff does require external apps on gnome and can be more annoying than just using a preset theme thats nice too.

I love nemo, with the terminal extension, it’s the perfect file manager.
I use it on gnome though.
With just arcmenu, dash to panel, and tophat, gnome becomes pretty solid for me, everything else is just a bonus
dropdownterminal, I think openbar for color and border customization, timer in topbar for self timing work assignments, appstatus whatever its called for the background apps to show up, it does rely on extensions, but I see that as a bonus, it’s up to you how complicated you want your setup to be
Burnmywindows ofc
I also think its great for handhelds, have dash to panel and arcmenu there too but configured differently. On the left side and resized larger with less options and one of the larger grid options for arc menu
