IIRC, POP3 downloaded all emails to local device. If you have more than one device, the first one gets it all and the second or more see nothing.
IMAP kept the messages on the server so there was one source of truth and multiple devices could access the same emails.
Most email clients support both. There are probably some people still running old POP3 clients, or they set it up one way and never bothered to change.
Not sure why gmail would care. Code’s been working for decades. Unless there are security considerations not worth mitigating.

Linux@programming.dev•39C3: Multiple vulnerabilities in GnuPG and other cryptographic tools
40·1 month agoIf someone ever invents a time machine, they should travel back in time and dope-slap Dennis Ritchie into NOT making C strings null-terminated.
So many security violations and malware can be traced back to that one decision.
Edit: Curl dude abides: https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2025/12/29/no-strcpy-either/
The whole thing is pegging my BS meter, including letting an L5 deploy without a code and architecture review, TC, and the fact that they’re posting this and claiming they’re still there.

It went for a walk in the park and grabbed a coffee, but it doesn’t want to be dinged for it.
Surprise wife hug attack. She won’t see it coming.

I sat hunched under my elderly mother’s car, video running on the phone in one hand, showing how to remove a ridiculously complicated headlamp cover, just to replace a busted headlight. Hand scraped and bleeding, but it got done. Would have NEVER figured it out otherwise.
Thanks that one YouTuber.
An old roommate did this but with pennies. I was finding them in my pockets and socks for years.

Just tell them to Let Off Some Steam.

A great idea. Could use a nice flashy GUI like Saleae protocol analyzers.
Definitely showing symptoms of Lupus.
