In the mean time, I usually just set up a “real” home directory in /home/$USER/$USER/ which is what gets backed up, and leave the original one for cruft.

Good point about a default deny approach to users and ssh, so random services don’t add insecure logins.
Yeah, current company has their internal git server default to master and it was a little odd first time I created a new repo. Luckily all the CI templates can recognize either name so I just switched it.
