Linux@programming.dev•New to Linux which OS to use?English
21·2 months agoMint is popular for beginners. I went with Debian KDE because I wanted something a little more minimalistic and boring. Fedora and OpenSUSE are also good options.
If you want to stick with a Windows-like desktop, pick a KDE distro over GNOME.
I don’t know how things are in different parts of the US/world, but I have so little confidence in food workers now that if I had a food allergy, I’d never eat at restaurants again.

Linux@programming.dev•Frustrated Windows users are switching to Linux because of Microsoft’s Windows 11 shenanigansEnglish
3·3 months agoYeah, that’s my biggest hesitation with recommending Linux to absolutely everyone. It’s super easy to install most of the time. But most people are not equipped to work around issues that may come up, and then the computer is as good as bricked until they find help.
Yep. And now we have little old ladies, who should’ve had their license yanked years ago, driving 4 ton trucks to get groceries.
Pity young people today.
Don’t be programmers; there’s no future in it.Fixed

54·3 months agoEvery professional Windows admin feels this in their bones. I hate Windows and Microsoft more than most of you ever could. Still gotta work with it unless the CIO gets the green light to rebuild the whole company’s infrastructure, commission at least one enterprise solution from scratch, and probably get fired in the process.

91·3 months agoI switched from W11 when Copilot Vision was scheduled for a forced install. Choose Debian KDE because my servers are all Debian-based already, and I wanted boring and stable. For the most part, it’s been smooth sailing. There’s a touchpad issue sometimes that requires reloading the mouse module, and updating my Dell dock requires loading a Windows boot disk to run the installer from that environment. That’s about it for problems. Using apt and flatpak to manage updates for all my software has been great. I do not miss downloading and clicking through installer wizards all the time.

27·4 months agoBack in the day we called them “expansion packs” instead of DLC because you went to the store and bought them on CD-ROM discs (or DVD-ROM if you had rich parents) because nobody’s Internet was fast enough to download a whole photoshopped nude of Cindy Crawford in less than 20 seconds, let alone a whole game expansion.

19·4 months agoI’m one of the unlucky ones who had years of pain afterward. I think the complication rate is underreported, by a lot. I went back and asked for help with the pain and they basically told me I was imagining it.
Also, it’s not really helpful to dismiss any accounts that don’t fit your narrative as “just a shit doc.” Even if that’s true, most laypeople can’t distinguish a shit doctor from a good one. FWIW, the doc that did mine had several interns watching and learning during my procedure, so apparently he was the best they had.

This was my exact experience with Manjaro.
