Cake day: June 16th, 2025

help-circle
  • Remember, the days of compiling was back when we were running this on 300-500Mhz single core CPUs with 5400RPM spinning rust and RAM amounts in the hundreds of MB.

The embedded system I was putting this on was a 300Mhz single core low power AMD processor with 256MB and a laptop 4200RPM 4GB drive. And yeah, it probably took over a day to compile everything… but it ran much faster than a stock kernel as I could customize the system to only have what it needed and leverage the on-chip ssl and video acceleration support. I used it for a NAS and home server for years.

  • Momentum and lack of time and awareness.

Most people don’t associate Windows as anything they can change. It’s what came with their PC, it currently works, it does what they want, the only thing they do is play that game and maybe surf the web… and even if they do know and care, when they get home late from work, the first thing they think is “let’s eat and then unwind with a game and go to bed”.

If more computers came with Linux from the factory, you’d see a better uptick because it’s done, it works, etc.

  • Personally, I never really counted the RP2350 as a successor. It’s a different animal completely. A 2040 successor would be something like 4x cortex-m0’s or a faster clock with more ram or whatever, the 2350 has completed different capabilities and components and can live along side the 2040.

I feel like the preferred one is the 2040 simply because it’s cheaper, and capable enough for the vast majority of use cases at this point.

Edit: yes I know RPI called their board using the 2350 the pico 2, but the 2040 chip itself is used in more places than just the pico and not every one used the 2350 as a v2.

  • The company I work for is currently developing an AI based system to “read” legal documents and boil them down to a few pieces of info to shove in a spreadsheet. One of the people I work with has to make a system that tests the quality of that AI. So far he’s found that to be an impossible task because the info he’d check it against, that in which humans did the same task, is also super fallible and basically he’s found that they both suck in different ways.

Which means the AI is just being used because no one can say its wrong, since no one can say its definitively right either… but it’s cheaper.

  • Same here. Though it makes sense as we also cut a “release” branch that aid what goes to production and it’s behind protections against rogue PRs/commits so devs can’t just push there, the process must be followed. “Main” is for devs. “Release” is for prod. “Master” didn’t really jive with that layout so it’s gone.

You seem to think democrats give a shit what either Biden did. If there’s evidence of someone being guilty, NO MATTER WHO IT IS, take them to court. No one, absolute No One should be above the law. Same with Trump. Give him a fair Trial. Send him to jail if he’s guilty. Whatever. That’s what we have a line of succession and due process. So Kamala takes over, that’s her job.

I don’t get why MAGA people seem to think that Presidents should be above the law just because people voted for them. They’re not kings. They’re not Gods. They’re normal people. If my chosen football team looses because they’re not playing by the rules, disqualify them. That’s how it’s supposed to work. I won’t be mad at the system because it worked, I’ll be mad at the system if it doesn’t work.
