linuxmemes@lemmy.world•What do you mean it's not $139.00 for an OS?
121·5 days agoTo be honest: Windows has been free (for home users) for a while now. To be brutally honest: Most of the users who’ve abandoned Microslop did so with free plugged into the value proposition.
The truth is that 10+ yo computer built with an eye to gaming is adequate and satisfactory for 85% of what you’d use a computer for. So long as you’ve done basic (and cheap) upgrades like SSD/M.2. Don’t get mad at me, but I picked up a RAM kit over the summer because it was so affordable. (DDR4)
But I’m not going to roll the hardware enthusiasts that act as early adopters for bleeding edge tech that I can afford used or surplus five years later. And they’re exactly the people getting railed the hardest by the component shortages. So it seems like a time for computer-people solidarity.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Not that I or anyone would ever have issues.
1351·10 days agoI’ve found the Linux community to be quite helpful. But I’ve not really used Lemmy for tech support. The Arch Wiki is damn near a Linux Wikipedia. And any active board dedicated to a particular Distro are where I’ve gotten help.
It seems really hard at first but the more problems you solve the more sense everything makes.
Ignore the gatekeepers.

Linux@programming.dev•Nvidia is reportedly bringing official Linux support to GeForce Now soon, not just for Steam Deck
82·1 month agoIsn’t “Geforce Now” the background service that you have to sign into? I’m glad that Nvidia is taking Linux seriously, but this was never useful on Windows. (for me)
I suppose some Linux users may find it useful, and having a choice is always better. But this is the kind of software I don’t miss since I switched.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•I can't believe they made a whole movie about this in 2004.
113·2 months agoThere is a movie with Margo Robbie called Terminal. The reason I know this is because if you type “terminal” into the Start Menu of a fresh copy of Windows 11, it’s the first result.

Linux@programming.dev•Linux 6.19 Gets Rid Of The Kernel's "Genocide" Function
424·2 months agoThat’s a false choice. And kind of silly. If you read the article, Linux has already changed commands somehow without blowing up everyone’s scripts.

Linux@programming.dev•Linux 6.19 Gets Rid Of The Kernel's "Genocide" Function
456·2 months agoWhy is it always the “it’s just a word bro” types who gnash their own eyes out over the prospect of changing one of those words?

Linux@programming.dev•What could be the best way to introduce the world of (linux) computers to kids?
40·3 months agoNo different than Windows. Kids will use what you put in front of them.
When I was fist getting interested in computers I didn’t want to run DOS, I wanted to play Doom.

Linux@programming.dev•Linux Package Managers Compared: APT, DNF, Pacman and Zypper
22·4 months agoMy desktop is Fedora and I have a file server running Debian. I was doing updates to the Debian box through ssh and it took me way to long to figure out why dnf wasn’t working.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•They should have used Linux because there's no sound in space
14·5 months agoSpeaking as someone who’s the default “tech” guy for older relatives, I’m glad M$ does forced updates.

Linux@programming.dev•Linux - Recreating old problems with new tools
4·5 months agoIt’s ironic that the author argues tht immutable distros are against the Linux ethos, but goes on to say we should be commercializing Linux instead.

Linux@programming.dev•The end of Windows 10 is approaching, so it's time to consider Linux and LibreOffice
4·8 months agoSwitching to Linux is activism. Not only are you making an anti-capitalist, anti-consumption statement, but active participation creates growth and change that’s observable and satisfying in a way that most direct action cannot be.
And even if drivers do exist, they may not include the extra software that comes bundled with drivers on Windows. The most obvious example is NVIDIA GeForce Experience suite.
This goes in the pro column if you ask me. I would pay extra for a printer that just has vanilla drivers and no software suite.
Does anyone use Microsoft because they like the software? Because all I ever hear is “I need it for games”, “I need it for work”, or “It’s the only system that works with my hardware”.
One wonders what the market share for OSs would look like if people were able to freely choose what software they liked.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Just installed mint yesterday, I get it now
0·9 months agoThe Windows terminal has some very good commands. ‘ssh username@server’ can log you right into a Linux machine!

I love this. The Luddites were an early labor movement and their reputation is pure capital propaganda.
