Tbf, Homer Hickam is pretty well respected around NASA (he was the main character in October Sky). He also said in an interview later that he didn’t have any say over their internship being withdrawn, it was all the retweets with people hastagging NASA that got NASA’s people’s attention.

Loftus always does good stuff. My fave is her Lolita podcast which breaks down the history of its public perception. The book is a monster attack story, but told from the viewport of the monster. Using flowery language talking to a jury is explaining how it’s not that bad, and he eventually rots in prison. The self serving lies are both obvious and numerous .

But some-fucking-how most people think it’s a problematic star crossed lovers, romeo and juilet, age is just a number, forbidden romance BS. Multiple movies and stage have distorted the book into the exact thing the author was mocking.

Sorry. Random rant. But goddamn does Jamie do good work.

I haven’t read Lolita but I just started reading Pale Fire by Nobokov so it’s funny you brought that up. I have heard about Lolita getting adopted by the very creeps it intends to rebuke. I’ll have to check out her podcast on it

There are more stable geniuses out there with at least a modicum of social decorum who would love to have that position. 🤷

You can’t just go around talking to people that way, especially when all the other person was “Language”, and expect to be taken seriously. You’re a bit of an energetic, not properly socialized child at best (if you’re actually underage), developmentally delayed and rude at worst.

People downvote you, but if i were hiring for a job with lots of wanting candidates and where one mistake has possibility of costing billions of dollars, i would too choose somebody who would know enough to recognize one of the more prevailing person on the field, or who would atleast have sense to look them up before starting dropping f bombs.

Or even more, one who does not drop f bombs at anybody.

I rant about the lack of moral frameworks, maturity and seriousness in Western societies pretty much every other day, I’m not too surprised by the response. I shouldn’t have trampled over their rights to be unnecessarily impolite and crude, I guess. 🤷

Yes, I agree, this Homer guy completely lacks decorum by seeing some stranger celebrating and trying to interrupt and censor it. Like, how do you just barge into someone’s conversation and try to rule how it has to proceed? Very rude indeed.

I agree, you can’t go around telling people to watch their language as a complete stranger on the internet and not expect to get dunked on.

They also developed the technology that will cause nuclear hellfire when the US empire decides to start using it.

All that technology could have been developed by a peaceful entity but instead was used as PR to whitewash the atrocity of nuclear weapons development.

the descendants of those nazis truly believe in the PR and they’ve doubled down; the woman whose computer i had to fix had prop 8 signs and a crucifix on her desk.

i decided to quit because i realized that the software i was supposed to be troubleshooting was intended to make missiles more aerodynamic and nothing to do with space.

It’s not (entirely) true. Although NASA did initially rescind their offer to her, Hickam actually stepped in to help and convinced them to renew the offer. But only the initial part of the story survives because it’s rage-inducing and that is what fuels clicks… OP should be ashamed for only posting half the story. But here I am “generating engagement” so… here we are…

I’m unsure if his response is more on the policing language side or more on the advisory, watch out, if you’re going to work for a government agency that is funded by politicians there’s a certain expectation for public decorum that has to be maintained so some congressman looking to score points doesn’t use you as a reason to cut funding. My guess, given he tried to help reinstate the internship, is that it was the latter.

If you read the linked article you’ll see he didn’t have anything to do with her losing her offer. The National Space Council doesn’t have hire/fire power

“As it turned out, it was due to the NASA hashtag her friends used that called the agency’s attention to it long after my comments were gone”. - Homer Hickam. Also, I’ve read his book, it’s decent. He’s had a somewhat interesting life.

And fucking destroying expensive, integral scientific equipment.

It’s bittersweet. We’ve always known the future of space is red. NASA was always doomed because every time you go into the control room, they greet you with a Siege Heil.
